This opening may be hybrid and will consider remote candidates as well. The work schedule is Monday – Friday (40 hour per week). This is a 10-week paid internship. The hourly rate for this position is $21.00 per hour for undergraduate students and $25.00 for graduate students.

Intern project:

  • You will be part of a project studying how to measure and quantify fairness/inequality/discrimination in the U.S. mortgage market with respect protected attributes of an applicant. Measurement of these concepts is not only a topic of interest in economics, but also in the machine learning literature which often centers on the question of how to evaluate and enforce fairness in AI/ML models. It also aligns with our bank’s high-priority initiatives.
  • As part of this project, we have constructed an interactive web application (dashboard) that presents various measures of inequality in the U.S. mortgage market. The user of this web application will be able to visualize various degree of inequality across space and time. In addition, the user can compare them for different groups. While we have an initial version available (that only includes the race/ethnicity of an applicant as the protected class), the intern would work on improving our dashboard.
  • We aim to collect feedback on our initial version during the next few months, and the feedback and suggestions we receive during this time will partially inform the exact task we have in mind. One goal will be to extend our dashboard to additional variables such as gender.
  • You may assist with other projects as needed.
