Job Purpose
The Payroll Analyst performs a wide variety of payroll accounting and administrative duties to support the Payroll Department including computing wage and overtime payments, calculating and recording payroll deductions, processing requests for paycheck advances and processing terminations. Roles in this class have specialized payroll-related duties that require skill in evaluating and analyzing technical payroll activities and may require training.
Responsibilities
- Prepares, processes and maintains payroll calculations; analyzes and reconciles payroll data on a monthly basis, as necessary
- Processes payroll distribution, direct deposit and Ad hoc payroll inquiries
- Assists payroll director/manager with various internal/external projects (Sox compliance payroll walk-throughs, worker compensation audits, etc.)
- Participates in the development of new procedures and policies related to payroll operations
- Compiles financial, tax and payroll reports for internal and external auditors; submits to supervisor for review
- Assists with loading, analyzing and reconciliation of payroll data due to M&A activity
- Assists with quarterly year-end reconciliations for 30 FEINs registered in over 40 states
- Troubleshoot, reconcile and process equity/dividend payrolls & new earnings and deduction codes to ensure payroll tax treatment configuration is accurate
- Works closely with Payroll Manager and Senior Payroll Specialists to review and audit payroll data
- Stays abreast of any payroll tax law changes and ensure payroll software is updated and in compliance
- Cross-trains within the payroll department, as needed
Knowledge and Experience
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
- 3+ years of payroll related experience
- Solid understanding of accounting fundamentals and payroll best practices, supported by proven experience
- Experience compiling, analyzing and reviewing data. Strong Excel skills required (VLOOKUP, pivot, etc.)
- Strong presentation and inter-personal skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Trustworthy with attention to confidentiality
- Outstanding organizational ability with great attention to detail
- High school diploma or equivalent; BS/BA in business, accounting or relevant field a plus
- Experience processing Canadian payroll
- Experience with ADP Workforce Now, Oracle or UKG payroll software a plus
