Job Purpose (Job Summary):

The candidate will coordinate and lead ESG efforts for real estate in North America, working closely with key stakeholders such as the Head of Investment Management, Portfolio Managers, Consultants/ Advisors, Global Head of ESG for Private Markets and other relevant internal stakeholders. The objective of the role is to be the primary lead for the execution of various ESG+R initiatives in North America that range from Net Zero Carbon to GRESB benchmarking to physical risk analysis. The candidate will collaborate with senior leaders to ensure that IRE progresses against targets by supporting teams in the development of plans at the portfolio and asset level to drive performance, enhance value and mitigate risk.

Key Responsibilities / Duties:

1) Investment Management and Portfolio Management

  • Support investment management teams with the assessment and development of ESG+R action plans to mitigate risk and enhance value.

  • Lead portfolio-wide programs such as reviewing energy procurement and targets to reduce GHG and expenses.

  • Assist with evaluation of emerging sustainable technologies that best meet the various asset classes.

  • Define energy and carbon strategy for new developments including measuring and reducing embodied carbon.

  • Support portfolio and investment managers in understanding climate-related risks and opportunities conducted by third parties.

  • Create asset-level resilience plans in collaboration with external consultants and investment managers.

2) ESG Data Management and Reporting

  • Oversee and contribute to maintenance of ESG data management systems held internally and externally to ensure maximized accuracy, consistency and coverage of ESG data.

  • Coordinate external ESG reporting aligned with third-party guidelines (e.g., INREV Sustainability Reporting Guidelines, UN PRI, GRESB)

  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders for external ESG reporting, notably the annual Global ESG+R report and fund specific reports

  • Enhance and explore technology alternatives to existing ESG data management systems to create efficiencies and adoption within the broader organization

3) Other key responsibilities

  • Work closely with external consultants as they support the rollout of ESG+R related initiatives.

  • Stay ahead of statutory/key market developments and ensure they are reflected in the ongoing maintenance/update of the Sustainability Vision and implementation strategy.

  • Support investor queries by either answering, reviewing and sign-off of response to ESG-related practices, policies and case studies.

  • Participate in internal and external ESG working groups.

  • Collaborate with investment strategy and strategic analytics teams to understand risks and opportunities related to ESG.

Work Experience / Knowledge:

  • 8-10+ years of experience in real estate asset management or ESG-related practices in real estate

  • Broad experience with ESG reporting frameworks including PRI, GRESB, TCFD, SFDR and Green Building certifications (LEED, BREEAM, Energy Star, Well, Passive House, etc.)

  • Strong interest and understanding of key ESG real assets topics, such as renewable energy, energy management climate risk and carbon offset market.

  • Knowledge of building decarbonization initiatives and track record of success in managing implementation of financially viable energy efficiency programs

Skills / Other Personal Attributes Required:

  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and projects simultaneously.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills: the ability to summarise and convey complex content.

  • Strategic thinker with an ability to work independently and proactively; keen eye for detail as well as the ability to focus and drive towards the bigger picture.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Entrepreneurial, resourceful, self‐starter, but also team‐oriented and collaborative

Formal Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. MBA or other advanced degree in environmental science, environmental management, or sustainability is strongly preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment with little exposure to noise, dust, and temperatures.

  • The ability to lift, carry or otherwise move objects of up to 10 pounds is also necessary.

  • Hours may include evenings or weekends.

  • Occasional travel may be required.
