This is a unique opportunity for you to work supporting ultra-high net worth client base, including interacting with Front Office and drafting of client communications and messaging.

As a Wealth Management Tax Compliance Officer – Vice President within the Client Tax Operations Private Bank team, you will be an important team member and help ensure global conformity with Internal Service Revenue regulations, as well as bank obligations to state revenue authorities and under various intergovernmental agreements, while providing technical support to teams that support our ultra-high net worth client base. You will take a leadership role in a team that provides an essential role, supporting the Private Bank at all levels, providing a variety of tax technical support to every aspect of the business, and supporting a variety of clients, all while ensuring that the bank remains compliant with Internal Revenue Service regulations and being a leader in the industry. You will also provide support to Client Tax Operations teams, managing escalations, providing exception approvals and complex documentation support and support teams during annual solicitation and tax season.

Job responsibilities

  • Maintain a high level of support to teams that serve our ultra-high net worth client base, supporting all aspects of the business to ensure a level of service and responsiveness our clients expect, balanced with obligations the firm has as a withholding agent
  • Work independently within an environment that encourages information sharing discussion and questioning, on a diversity of tasks throughout the day for a wide variety of people
  • Serve as direct point of contact for tax information and client documentation to offer sound tax advice to business colleagues
  • Serve as subject matter expert and support for client facing teams and act as decision maker and approver on matters, supported by management as appropriate
  • Advise as to the rules regarding documentation, withholding and reporting under Chapter 4, Chapter 3, and Chapter 61
  • Manage responses to IRS communications, including B Notices, C Notices, and civil penalties. Certify and approval annual IRS 1220 filings and state revenue filings
  • Support the technology projects from a technical tax advisory perspective, including identifying automation opportunities and operational improvement
  • Implement and support daily processes and procedures for continuous information reporting and withholding compliance in relationship onboarding, account opening, Client Service and Front Office
  • Monitor the release of tax updates related to various U.S. reporting and withholding regimes including intergovernmental agreements with partner jurisdictions. Lead projects as appropriate to implement
  • Provide education, training, and tax technical expertise to various client facing and tax documentation teams as needed

Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Undergraduate degree in appropriate and transferrable field

  • 5+ years of tax experience required

  • Advanced familiarity with IRS tax documentation such as Form W-9, W-8BEN, W-8IMY and BEN-E, as well as associated withholding and reporting requirements

  • Effective knowledge of IRS requirements (i.e., Revenue code sections and Treasury regulations), with a specific focus on information reporting and withholding

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (including presentation) and influencing capabilities

  • Highly organized and detail oriented with strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), with demonstrated ability to simplify complex subject matter into digestible executive communications

Preferred qualifications, capabilities and skills

  • Work towards an advanced degree in a tax-related field. Enrolled agent or similar IRS registration

  • Prior position in banking, specifically supporting ultra-high net worth client base, including interacting with Front Office, and drafting of client communications and messaging

  • Exposure to automation software, including Alteryx, Tableau, and others

  • Indirect or direct leadership experience with small teams. Experience coordinating projects across teams

  • Experience with K-1 partnership reporting and alternatives products
