Principal Software Engineer
PayPal
The Company
PayPal has been revolutionizing commerce globally for more than 25 years. Creating innovative experiences that make moving money, selling, and shopping simple, personalized, and secure, PayPal empowers consumers and businesses in approximately 200 markets to join and thrive in the global economy.
We operate a global, two-sided network at scale that connects hundreds of millions of merchants and consumers. We help merchants and consumers connect, transact, and complete payments, whether they are online or in person. PayPal is more than a connection to third-party payment networks. We provide proprietary payment solutions accepted by merchants that enable the completion of payments on our platform on behalf of our customers.
We offer our customers the flexibility to use their accounts to purchase and receive payments for goods and services, as well as the ability to transfer and withdraw funds. We enable consumers to exchange funds more safely with merchants using a variety of funding sources, which may include a bank account, a PayPal or Venmo account balance, PayPal and Venmo branded credit products, a credit card, a debit card, certain cryptocurrencies, or other stored value products such as gift cards, and eligible credit card rewards. Our PayPal, Venmo, and Xoom products also make it safer and simpler for friends and family to transfer funds to each other. We offer merchants an end-to-end payments solution that provides authorization and settlement capabilities, as well as instant access to funds and payouts. We also help merchants connect with their customers, process exchanges and returns, and manage risk. We enable consumers to engage in cross-border shopping and merchants to extend their global reach while reducing the complexity and friction involved in enabling cross-border trade.
Our beliefs are the foundation for how we conduct business every day. We live each day guided by our core values of Inclusion, Innovation, Collaboration, and Wellness. Together, our values ensure that we work together as one global team with our customers at the center of everything we do – and they push us to ensure we take care of ourselves, each other, and our communities.

What you need to know about the role:
PayPal's Consumer Platform is looking for a seasoned principal engineer with a track record of
designing and scaling incentive, rewards, and loyalty platform at global scale. You will define and
drive the technical architecture strategy across PayPal’s Promotions Platform ensuring engineering
teams build a cohesive, scalable, and resilient platform vision.
Meet our team:
PayPal’s Promotions Platform powers rewards and incentive experiences across the company’s
three-sided network—connecting merchants, consumers, and PayPal's commerce ecosystem
through offers, incentives, loyalty programs, and targeted campaigns. Our platform serves as
foundational infrastructure for products including PayPal+, Venmo Rewards, merchant-funded
offers, and large-scale promotional campaigns.
We operate at the intersection of consumer experience, financial services, and distributed
systems—processing millions of transactions, campaign evaluations, and reward events daily
across global markets.
Your Way to Impact:
As Principal Engineer, you will be the technical authority for the Promotions Platform, defining the
long-term architectural strategy and ensuring that our engineering teams are aligned on shared
standards, domain boundaries, and platform evolution. You will translate business direction into
durable technical decisions, reduce systemic risk through proactive platform governance, and
elevate engineering quality across the organization.
You will partner closely with stakeholders across roles and organizations to understand the
business requirements and ensure the platform is built with intention, while maintaining its
reliability and compliance required by a leading financial services company. Your work will directly
accelerate PayPal's ability to launch new markets, onboard new reward partners, and deliver
differentiated consumer loyalty experiences.
Expectations:
• Define and own the platform architecture roadmap: Establish and maintain the technical
vision for the Promotions Platform, domain boundaries, ownership models, integration
contracts, and API design.
• Lead cross-team architectural governance: Drive architectural decision-making across five
engineering teams, facilitating alignment on shared infrastructure, preventing domain
boundary drift, and establishing clear patterns for campaign lifecycle.
• Partner on platform-as-product strategy: Work alongside Technical Directors and Product
leadership to define platform capabilities, engagement models, and intake processes that
position the Promotions Platform as a scalable internal product serving multiple business
lines.
• Establish engineering standards and resilience frameworks: Define and enforce standards
for observability, campaign governance, testing, and incident prevention—translating
lessons from past operational incidents into durable systemic improvements.
• Influence cross-organizational technical strategy: Represent the Promotions Platform in
company-wide architectural forums, advocating for platform needs while ensuring
alignment with PayPal's broader technical ecosystem including risk, compliance, and
developer productivity platforms.
• Drive architecture remediation and modernization: Define and execute a cohesive
architecture remediation strategy that systematically decouples legacy systems, reduces
fragmentation across heterogeneous infrastructure stacks, and moves the platform toward
a unified, interoperable technology landscape.
• Reduce friction in platform adoption: Lower the barrier to entry for engineering teams and
partners consuming Promotions Platform capabilities by improving developer experience,
standardizing integration patterns, and providing clear self-service tooling, documentation,
and engagement models. Measure and continuously improve the time-to-integrate for new
consumers of the platform, ensuring adoption is driven by the quality of the platform rather
than heroic tribal knowledge.
• Mentor and grow technical talent: Serve as a technical role model and coach for staff and
senior engineers across the organization, elevating the overall architectural thinking and
system design capabilities of the team.
What You Bring:
• Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; advanced degree preferred.
• 15+ years of engineering experience, with a strong focus on building and scaling platform
infrastructure in high-availability, high-transaction-volume environments.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems design, API architecture, event-driven systems, and
domain-driven design principles.
• Proven ability to lead architectural governance across multiple engineering teams,
establishing shared standards without sacrificing team autonomy.
• Strong track record of driving platform reliability improvements through observability, chaos
engineering, incident prevention and management, and platform operationalization.
• Ability and desire to navigate a high degree of technical and organizational complexity,
ambiguity, and conflicting constraints.
• Excellent communication and executive presentation skills, with demonstrated ability to
synthesize complex technical decisions into clear recommendations for VP and SVP
audiences.
• Experience working in global, multi-market environments with an appreciation for the
technical complexity of international product launches and compliance requirements.
• Results-oriented and self-motivated, with a bias toward action and a record of delivering
architectural improvements that measurably accelerate engineering velocity and platform
reliability.
