We are seeking an experienced AWS SQL Architect with expertise in Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL) to design, implement, and optimize scalable database solutions in the AWS cloud. This role will focus on architecting and migrating MSSQL databases to AWS while ensuring high performance, security, and reliability.
As a key technical leader, you will work closely with data engineers, cloud architects, and business stakeholders to define data strategies, database migrations, ETL pipelines, and performance optimization solutions. This is an excellent opportunity for a data professional with deep expertise in SQL Server, AWS cloud services, and database architecture best practices to shape the foundation of a cloud-first data ecosystem.

Slalom is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. For this position, the base salary pay range is $131,000 to $186,000 for Senior Consultant level and is $145,000 to $206,000 for Principal level and is $167,000 to $237,000 for Senior Principal level. In addition, individuals may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. Actual compensation will depend upon an individual’s skills, experience, qualifications, location, and other relevant factors. The salary pay range is subject to change and may be modified at any time.

We are seeking an experienced AWS SQL Architect with expertise in Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL) to design, implement, and optimize scalable database solutions in the AWS cloud. This role will focus on architecting and migrating MSSQL databases to AWS while ensuring high performance, security, and reliability.

What You’ll Do
- Design and optimize SQL Server solutions on AWS, including Amazon RDS for SQL Server, EC2-hosted MSSQL, and AWS SQL Server Always On Availability Groups.
- Experience performing\leading server migrations to AWS using AWS Database Migration Service (DMS), Schema Conversion Tool (SCT), and custom automation scripts.
- Design high-performance database schemas, indexing strategies, partitioning, and query optimization techniques for SQL Server workloads as well as optimizing complex SQL queries, stored procedures, views, and functions to improve database performance.
- Implement high-availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR) solutions, including Always on Failover Clusters, Log Shipping, and Replication.
- Establish and enforce data security best practices, including encryption, IAM-based access control, and compliance with industry standards.
- Work closely with DevOps teams to implement Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) solutions using Terraform, CloudFormation, or AWS CDK.
- Monitor SQL Server performance using tools like CloudWatch, Performance Insights, Query Store, and Dynamic Management Views (DMVs).
- Collaborate with software engineers and data teams to integrate AWS-hosted SQL Server databases with enterprise applications and analytics platforms.
- Travel expectations: up to 10% regional travel
- 8+ years of experience in SQL Server database architecture, design, and administration.
- Strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL) and query performance tuning.
- Hands-on experience with AWS database services, including Amazon RDS for SQL Server and EC2-hosted MSSQL instances.
- Strong understanding of SQL Server high-availability solutions, such as Always-On, Availability Groups, Failover Clustering, and Replication.
- Experience in ETL development and data integration using SSIS, AWS Glue, or other pipeline tools.
- Familiarity with AWS networking, VPCs, security groups, and hybrid cloud connectivity.
- Hands-on experience with DevOps and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools, such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with the ability to resolve complex database performance issues.
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and serverless computing (AWS Lambda, Fargate).
- AWS certifications such as AWS Certified Database – Specialty or AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional.
- Experience with Oracle, NoSQL databases and hybrid cloud database architectures.
- Knowledge of big data and analytics technologies (Redshift, Athena, Snowflake, Power BI, Tableau).
